I’ve had a couple requests to share outfit ideas for what to wear to the U.S. Open and it’s giving me a good push to figure out my own outfit for the occasion. We haven’t been in a few years but I bought tickets for Will’s birthday as something to look forward to and the date is fast approaching!
This annual tennis tournament kicks off in New York City in late August and wraps up in early September and the weather forecast and the fashion choices can be all over the place. One year Will and I sat in the sun in Arthur Ashe Stadium and all I remember is being so uncomfortably hot I could barely enjoy a single tennis match! So while I think it’s always a good idea to bring a lightweight sweater just in case (especially if you’re going for a night session!), you’ll see I’ve prioritized mostly lightweight fabrics and hats for sun protection in the little style guide below.
Whether it’s your first time at the U.S. Open or you attend every year, I hope this gives you some helpful outfit inspiration as you start brainstorming about what to wear!
Shirtdress + wide-brimmed hat
racquet straw hat // drop waist shirtdress // white slingback flats (15% off with code SF-MH-SUMMER)
How absolutely perfect is this straw hat with the tennis racquet detail? A great way to ensure sun protection without sacrificing style. I’ve had this shirtdress for several years now and the lightweight fabric would be perfect for a hot afternoon by the tennis court.
Tennis skirt + stylish sneakers
I think the key to wearing a tennis-inspired skirt like this one is to make sure the rest of your outfit doesn’t make you look like an actual tennis player — think pairing a flouncy white skirt with a striped button-down as opposed to a more athletic polo shirt. And comfortable shoes are a must for any sporting event — these Tretorn sneakers are an affordable pick and easy to walk thousands of steps in. And there’s no better occasion to don this classic Polo Ralph Lauren baseball cap!
Linen shorts + a wicker bag
If you do want to embrace a slightly less casual dress code, these wedge espadrilles are the best way to get a little height without sacrificing comfort. These linen shorts are my favorite because they have a tailored look in the front and look nice and polished with a crisp white button-down, but they have an elastic waist in the back so they’re a perfect lightweight fabric option for sitting outside all day.
Midi dress + raffia flats
I adore this sleeveless striped midi dress from J.Crew’s new arrivals and it would be a perfect choice for the U.S. Open paired with these pretty raffia ballet flats that I’ve been eyeing since last year.
White shirtdress + pink sweater
Sweaters in lightweight fabrics like cotton are a great choice for a night session at the U.S. Open. Bow details have been one of my favorite fashion trends the past year or two and I love the little bow detail on this style from Mme. Mink!
White wide-brimmed hat + embellished button-down shirt
I am in love with this embellished button-down shirt, especially paired with these crisp linen shorts and pretty leather bow sandals for a day session at the U.S. Open.
