This time of year I usually get a few requests to share outfit ideas for what to wear to the U.S. Open. We haven’t bought tickets yet this year — I keep going back and forth on whether Teddy and Peter would find it fun or just… too hot, and I’d rather wait until they can really enjoy it! TBD. 🙂
The annual tennis tournament kicks off in New York City in late August and wraps up in early September and the weather forecast and the fashion choices can be all over the place. One year Will and I sat in full sun at Arthur Ashe Stadium and all I remember is being so uncomfortably hot I could barely enjoy a single tennis match! So while I think it’s always a good idea to bring a lightweight sweater just in case (especially if you’re going for a night session!), I’ve prioritized mostly lightweight fabrics and hats for sun protection in the little style guide below.
Whether it’s your first time at the U.S. Open or you attend every year, I hope this gives you some fun outfit ideas as you start brainstorming about what to wear!
Shirtdress + wide-brimmed hat
How absolutely perfect is this straw hat with the tennis racquet detail? A great way to ensure sun protection without sacrificing style. I’ve had this shirtdress for several years now and the lightweight fabric would be perfect for a hot afternoon by the tennis court.
Crisp green & white
I love a green and white look for a tennis match! These white chino shorts have been a favorite of mine all summer (I would recommend sizing up if you’re on the fence) and I think they would be adorable with this crisp button-down and my go-to white sneaks.
White shirtdress + a chic straw hat
I’ve had this chic straw hat for years and wear it anywhere from the beach to a boat day, but it’s practically made for a daytime match at the U.S. Open. Instant chic! I wore this affordable white shirtdress on repeat this summer (including for Rory’s baptism!) and the fit is incredible for the price.
An embroidered oxford shirt + woven accessories
I spotted this tennis racquet-embroidered oxford shirt on Instagram and knew I had to include it here! It would be darling with the white chino shorts above or these playful pink silk shorts dressed down with raffia flats.
Striped button-down and ivory pants
striped button-down // white straw hat
wicker bag // gold sandals // cropped Colby pants (code MACKENZIEH10 for 10% off your first order!)
I finally got on the bandwagon for La Ligne’s famous Colby pants sometime last year and had the navy pair hemmed to fit me at 5’1″. Imagine my delight when they came out with a cropped pair this year — I’ve never ordered anything as fast as I did this ivory pair! These are a wardrobe investment that will take you well beyond the U.S. Open — use code MACKENZIEH10 for 10% off your first order!
White halter dress + straw hat
A slightly dressier look if you’re attending an evening match — this Tuckernuck halter dress is so pretty on and would be perfect with this straw hat I fell in love with this summer (truly my new go-to for the beach & beyond) and these splurge-worthy beaded sandals.
