THE CUSTOM HOUSE NEEDLEPOINT CANVAS I’M STITCHING FOR MY MOM

One of the goals on my current list of 101 things I want to do in 1001 days is to needlepoint something for each of my parents. I definitely didn’t fully appreciate how much time and love go into any kind of needlepoint gift until I learned to needlepoint myself, and I truly can’t wait to give my mom this custom house needlepoint canvas as a tiny token of appreciation for all she does for our family week in and week out! I hope this needlepoint canvas of their home on Nantucket is something she will treasure for many years to come, even if it first takes me multiple years to finish stitching it. 🙂

I had bookmarked a custom house needlepoint canvas on Etsy years ago thinking it would make an adorable Christmas ornament or even a small framed piece, but I ultimately decided to look for a larger custom design that would capture the house in greater detail. I’ve framed needlepoint canvases before (you can see a few examples in this post!), but I really wanted this needlepoint canvas to feel like true artwork that could hang on the wall as a stand-alone piece vs. something smaller that could get lost on a bookshelf.

(If you’re just getting started needlepointing, starting with small scale needlepoint projects like key fobs or Christmas ornaments is the way to go! This way you can get the hang of it before moving on to a bigger project like a needlepoint belt or Christmas stocking. This custom house needlepoint canvas will definitely be my biggest needlepoint undertaking to date (even more so than this needlepoint lucite tray and our children’s custom Christmas stockings!) and I know I would have found it really intimidating if I’d started with something this large in scale!)

All that to say I was so excited when I found this Etsy seller who hand-paints high quality custom needlepoint canvases based on the photo(s) you send in! Her custom needlepoint canvases are extraordinarily detailed and while the large areas of blue sky and green grass on this canvas will take me many hours to stitch, I love that you can make out my mom’s beautiful hydrangeas and front porch planters in detail! (If you’re looking for smaller needlepoint projects, there are plenty of other Etsy shops that offer custom needlepoint design — I found similar listings for custom house needlepoint canvases herehere, and here!)

The artist was kind enough to include my initials and the year in the corner of the canvas though it very much remains to be seen whether I can actually finish needlepointing this in a single calendar year. We shall see!

P.S. Interested in seeing more needlepoint canvases? I’ve shared lots more needlepoint projects here, here, herehere, and here!
